What Is WhatsApp Co-Existence

WhatsApp Co-existence is an official capability provided by Meta that allows a business to use the same WhatsApp Business App phone number simultaneously on both the WhatsApp Business App and the WhatsApp Business Platform (API). In a co-existence setup, the phone number that is already registered on the WhatsApp Business App does not need to be removed or re-registered to access the API. Instead, the existing WhatsApp Business App account is extended to connect with the WhatsApp Business Platform using Meta’s approved onboarding process. Co-existence applies only to WhatsApp Business App numbers and is enabled during onboarding through Embedded Signup. During this process, the business selects the option to onboard using an existing WhatsApp Business App account. Once the onboarding is completed, the same phone number becomes associated with both the WhatsApp Business App and the WhatsApp Business Platform under a single business identity. This setup does not create a new WhatsApp account or duplicate the phone number. The business profile, phone number, and account ownership remain unchanged. The number continues to exist as one WhatsApp Business account that is accessible through two interfaces. WhatsApp co-existence is different from traditional WhatsApp Business API onboarding, where the phone number must be disconnected from the WhatsApp Business App before being registered on the API. With co-existence, the app registration remains active while the API connection is added. In simple terms, WhatsApp co-existence defines a configuration where a single WhatsApp Business App number is officially connected to both the WhatsApp Business App and the WhatsApp Business Platform at the same time, using Meta’s supported framework.
